4 Effective Tips to Stay Relaxed in Stressful Situations

While stress may seem like a normal part of life, it can have devastating effects on your health. Chronic stress results from repeated stressful events that don’t give your body a chance to relax. Therefore, you should train yourself to be relaxed in stressful situations.

Here are some handy tips to get you started.

1.       Take a Pause

Picture yourself in a situation in which the world seems to be moving too fast. For instance, it could be that time of the month when you need to pay your bills, your business is making constant losses, or you have received an eviction notice from your rental home. If you decide to go with the flow, you will end up being more stressed. Therefore, you should take a break from everything and think about your situation. During your break, be sure to meditate, sleep adequately, rest, and take care of your body. Taking a break puts you in the right state of mind to assess your situation and come up with feasible solutions.

2.      Master Breathing Exercises

For short-term stressful moments such as while attending a job interview, breathing exercises can come in handy. Here, you simply need to take slow, deep breaths until your heart rate decreases. By controlling your breathing, you will be assuring your body that all is fine and that there’s no need to panic. In other words, slow breaths help deactivate the fight or flight response of the sympathetic nervous system, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

3.      Be Open-minded

Train your mind to view situations positively. This is because your attitude during the stressful moment can determine how you handle the stress and even the outcome of the situation, according to researchers at Duke University. With this in mind, stay open-minded and avoid overthinking whenever you face a stressful situation in life. Instead, think about the positive side of your situation and try to adopt a different narrative that will alleviate the stress. For instance, if you receive a warning letter at work, do not view this as a gateway to your career downfall. Rather, take it as an opportunity to improve your behavior and performance at work, which will help your career.

4.      Listen to Soothing Music

In general, listening to soothing music can calm you down in a stressful situation and help you get through it without hurting yourself or others. However, don’t limit yourself to listening to music if it does not help you relax. That said, explore other habits that might calm you, such as soaking in a warm bath, watching a movie, taking photographs of nature, taking a walk in the woods, and having your friends over. The primary goal is to stay relaxed in a stressful situation to avoid adverse effects. Take note that if nothing works, you should consider leaving the stressful environment to find peace elsewhere. For instance, if your job is your primary stressor, consider seeking employment elsewhere.
